2013 Ford Fusion Gains Lane-Departure Warning System

Attention safety-minded drivers: The Ford Fusion will be safer than ever for the 2013 model year with the addition of a lane-departure warning system. With origins in Japan, the potentially life-saving feature is typically reserved for luxe-car consumers willing to pay a premium for the feature. So yes, this is a very BIG deal.

How exactly does the lane-departure system work? A digital camera and imaging sensor mounted on the car's rear windshield recognizes yellow and while lane markers and the Fusion's respective distance from each. If the system senses the car drifting across either line, it will automatically vibrate the steering wheel.

If this is not enough to prompt a driver to correct their positioning, the 2013 Ford Fusion's lane-departure warning system then emits audible chimes as well as a lit coffee cup symbol on the dash.

Robins Ford, is happy to say that the forthcoming Fusion won't the only new Ford model to gain the accident-preventing technology. The American automaker divulges plans to bring it to other new models, including the Ford Explorer SUV, as well.

Exactly what kind of effect can lane-departure technology have on accident prevention? The answer is profound. To put it into perspective, consider that the NHTSA reports 100,000 crashes per year are caused by drowsy driving. Fifteen percent of those result in death.
